The Business of Blogging – Backstage

At Style Me Pretty we pride ourselves on being more than a blog. We’re always looking for ways to improve what we offer brides by building a little something that they can use to make their wedding planning experience more fun.

One of the ideas we had that we hoped would drive reader engagement is allowing readers to specify images in the comment section of a post. This allows readers to talk about which photos move them or which details of a wedding they love. Interested in seeing how this might work? Watch the following screencast.

We’re still considering if this is right for SMP. There are lots of display and UI issues to consider before rolling something like this out. This is just one of the many additional features we’re working on. Let us know what you think. Leave a comment below.

Wow! I think it’s a great idea, and totally worth the time/investment/headaches it might cost you. As a reader, I often get confused when commenters are only able to reference a photo with text (i.e. “Third down on the right.”). Letting your community “tag” photos this way (the UI in the video looks smooth!) is a huge step in the future of blogging.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Taryn. I’d love to give this a try. Perhaps we’ll push it live for a few days and see if people like it.

  3. Kris Rae says:

Great innovation! As photographers, we’d love to get feedback from readers on specific images they like.

  4. Tzo Ai says:

I think this is a great idea! Especially with people using your wedding inspiration gallery to find specific things, they can also comment on specific images. I often use it myself. I think this would be a wonderful tool to engage readers even more.

  5. Tait says:

Thanks Kris and Tzo! I *really* want to engage readers more and I love the idea of getting photographers more feedback on their work.

I’m working on pushing out a “lite” version of this as a start. Basically if you include a link to a photograph from a gallery in a post comment we’ll turn it into an inline photo.

I hope we’ll have this out next week. Once we see how people use this we’ll try to make selecting photos for use in our comments easier.

    Hey All,

We’re close to pushing this out. Here’s another iteration on this interface.

A “scroll to top” button at the bottom of all your sites, including SMP Backstage, would be much-appreciated by me and, I think, many others. Just a thought …

  9. Tait says:

Thanks Natty! I think that’s a really good call. I’ll talk to the team about implementing it.
