The Business of Blogging – Backstage

Hello Backstagers. It’s been a while since we had an official catch-up, and since I took the liberty of splashing my family album all over last week’s posts, I thought we were in need of a little SMP love. And a look at all the things we’ve been doing behind the scenes lately! Although it’s a bit of a brag fest, it’s a great way for you to dive into the SMP brand a bit further…not to mention a good way to keep track of where we’ve been and where we’re goin’.

Okay, so here goes nothing. Living the Dream recently featured yours truly with an interview on how I got started and words of wisdom, the New York Times wrote a piece on elopements, mentioning SMP and our favorite elopement to date. And we have fun features on Etsy, on Bebe’s new blog and we’re now contributing to both SheKnows and TresSugar!

Also, as you all know, Huff Post launched their wedding site fairly recently. Which is very much in line with their greater brand though tilted to the wedding industry. We’ve had some love from them over the past few months and have scored some pretty great guest spots. Our latest was a St. Patty’s Day feature which turned out super cute.

We’ve also blogged about fun alternatives for wedding cakes, great Fall inspired wedding ideas and the ten weddings that set the style bar.

In other news, we did a guest blog over on Glamour.com all about the 5 most inspiring weddings we’re currently loving. We were also featured on Shape.com a couple of weeks ago with an interview about all things SMP. It was a great experience and I’m hoping that we can do a Shape wedding collaboration. I for one would LOVE to do a tailored bridal bootcamp for our readers! What do you think? Would you jump on the get-in-shape train with me?

What else? We spotted our names in Mashables 21 Must-Follow Pinners and in 7 Tips for Planning a Wedding on Pinterest…which is kind of awesome. We are in the process of working out a new logo, a new site look, a few other fun adventures that we’re keeping mum on for the time being. We’re prepping for Engage in Las Vegas, for a fun bridal event in Toronto, putting the finishing touches on our book and getting ready to escape the kiddos for one night to celebrate my 33rd birthday coming up in just a couple of weeks.

We’re also wanting to start developing Backstage into a really great resource for you and want to get the wheels turning. Here are some topics that we’d love to cover but we would also like to hear from you and what types of things you would like to hear more about…

  • Working with Virtual Employees: Tips and Tools
  • Cultivating Loyalty and Love within Your Company
  • Behind the Scenes: Editor’s Desks
  • Recipes for this Busy Mom
  • Behind the Scenes: Our New Offices
  • Audrey’s 3rd Birthday, 7 months late
  • Tips for Starting Your Own Creative Business: The Early Stages

Again, we would loooooove to hear more from you and understand more about the type of content you want to read about. When it comes to business and babies, chances are we’ve been there or are currently experiencing it. And we’re happy to share what we’ve learned, what we’re hoping to learn and what we wish we knew. Any and all topics welcome!

xoxo – Abby

Congratulations on all the recognition and press Abby, Tait and the SMP team – y’all do great work and deserve the positive feedback.

I love the list of upcoming topics for Backstage. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts about developing writing and editing skills and strategy / tips / lessons on developing a brand (tips on creating a logo, website that is easy to navigate).

The boot-camp sounds promising, count me in. If you’d like, I can share my marathon training schedule I created/tweaked….if I can run a marathon than truly anyone can and it might be a stress-reliever for engaged couples planning a wedding or something fun for couples or bridal parties to do together. Yes, I totally have the running bug so this all sounds normal to me :)

Hi Heather!!! So good to hear from you! But honestly, I can run to the end of my block. And that’s only if someone is chasing me. I would love to hear how you did it. That takes some serious dedication!!

Love the ideas that you have for backstage. Hope all is well in Austin! Come back to Boston for a visit sometime soon!!! Oh and I see that you’ve launched your own blog. Can’t wait to take a look.

    XO

Exciting stuff! Really looking forward to reading more. Also, a big thanks for linking to many of your recent interviews from your SMP Twitter account…that’s how I get my news these days!

I’m curious to learn about your content schedule & tips for managing a team of writers/editors. Do you use a content calendar? I use a spreadsheet, but it makes me feel like a dinosaur. There’s gotta be a better way, right?

  4. Selena H says:

Yes, I’m looking forward to the topics listed too, especially the new offices and of course, cute kid pictures.
It is an exciting time and I’m so ever thankful to be part of the LBB. Keep up the great work and making the connections. I truly appreciate it. P.S. Love my morning dose of SMP. I never get tired of it.

I’m looking forward to the new topics listed above as well! I would particularly love to hear more about the last one – tips for starting your own creative business. I am in the process of trying to start a wedding planning business and love to hear advice from those who have started their own business. Like HK, I would also love to hear your thoughts on developing a brand – logo, website, etc. Thanks for all you do at SMP! It’s my daily inspiration. :)

  6. Awesome Abby + SMP Team! Some exciting stuff :) All those topics sound amazing. Can’t wait to see them!

I would LOVE to hear about when you decided it was time to hire people to do things for you or for certain tasks, how you found them, and the entire hire process.
